Quick Draw McGraw -- for the best yarn involving “cards”: 1998 - Jena Patterson (7 yellow and 2 red in a Varina/Lee-Davis Boys match; 2000 - Pat “I never give cards” Kaveney (for giving two in the VHSL AAA Boys’ championship match; 2001 - Bruce Frye (for requesting a card because the Bluestone coach was a menace to navigation; 2002 - Steven Martz (threw out two coaches – who were in the stands); Winter 2003-Howard Nester (kicked a player out after the match); Fall 2003 - Bert Wilson (carded Howard for accidentally bunging a player with a ball; 2004-David Bassler (gave a red card to player whose team was ahead by 20 points); 2005 - Hawthrone Wilkes; 2006 - Ron Jones (yellow carded the Mathews announcer prior to the match for announcing his name as “Jerry Stone”; 2007 - Hank Hartz (reverse award for NOT giving a card to the Deep Run coach during a regional match because the umpire [from another association] who requested it baited the coach into a sanction); 2008 – Brian Cowles (for giving an individual player two (2) yellow cards in the same match); 2009 – Chris Hairston (three cards in three minutes) & Howard Nester (hereafter known as the ‘nipple’ ref); 2010 – Howard (another ejection after the match) Nester for booting a player for yelling “Shut the Hell Up” as he shook hands with his opponents; 2011 – Howard (two years in a row) Nester for issuing a BLACK card to a coach when he held up his yellow card which was still in the card sleeve; 2012 (tie) – Annie Abernethy for carding the Tabb coach in the first set of her first-ever high school scrimmage and Jeff Carter for carding a Midlothian boys’ player on the second point of the first set of the year’s first scrimmage; 2013 – Darren Hutson for carding four (4) Manchester boys players for improperly changing sides between sets; 2014 - John Thomas for giving the first cards ever to the Richmond Christian Head Coach and Atlee Boys JV Coach, who have 45 years of coaching experience between them; 2015 - Alecia Hairston for ending a boys match by red-carding the coach who made “a gesture” towards her partner when his back was turned; 2016 - Tim Gunn for NOT requesting a the ejection of the Cosby coach when the James River scorekeeper told Tim that that same Cosby coach said he was going to fight the referees after the match, when in fact it turned out that the coach really said "If we don't watch out, there's going to be a fight (among the players)"; 2017 - Jerry Morris for tossing Collegiate’s scoreboard operator; 2018 - Not Awarded; 2019 - Hank Hartz for tossing Petersburg’s assistant boys coach (who was also a Petersburg city cop); 2023 - Not offially given, but John (JT) Thomas ejected a boys' coach BEFORE the first match of that coach's invitational tournament.
Life’s Most Embarrassing Moment -- ‘nuff said: 1999-Buz Haymans (zipper issue); 2000-Ron Farris (another zipper issue); 2001-Bonny Hajek (forgot her socks so she inked her ankles black with magic marker); 2002-Randall Carson (packed his wife’s black pants – needless to say they didn’t fit); Winter 2003-David Bassler (when demonstrating proper the use of flags, his flag broke in half and flew 30 feet.); Fall 2003-Buddy Thomas (went to the bathroom between games and got lost trying to return to the MWGS gym) and Buz Haymans; 2004-Darryl McCartt (letting his flag fly across the court coming to rest on the inbounds spot); 2006- Tom Dent (during warm-ups got smashed in the face by a serve so hard he required medical treatment); 2007 (tie) – Willie Jones (made a call, then changed it three times until it was back at his original ruling) & Doug Schutte (got run over by a pair of female players while working as a line judge at the Showcase Tournament); 2008 – Dave Roever (in his 16th year of reffing in Richmond, went to the wrong school and just avoided a speeding ticket trying to get to his match on time); 2009 – Bob Provost (went to the wrong school for the AAA regional semi-finals); 2010 – David Bassler (forgot his uniform for a district playoff match and his picture showed up in the local paper the next day); 2011 – Joe Moore (only realized at the pre-match conference that he had on BROWN shoes); 2012 – Darryl McCartt (at the RVC Showcase, did the coaches’ meeting and coin toss on the wrong court); 2013 – Doug Schutte (was parked illegally and had to stop his match in order to move his car before it got towed); 2014 - Randall Carson - needed to give a coach a yellow card, but discovered that he’d left his cards in his ref kit. He called his partner across the court to borrow his cards, but his partner’s cards were in his kit, too; 2015 - Tim Gunn - Performed the Captains' meeting, conducted warm-ups, observed player introductions, whistled teams onto the court, and proceeded to the R1's side of the court to start the match, only to discover that there was no referee stand; 2016 - Ellen Mooradian -While getting ready for a Regional match at Bruton, was required to change into her uniform in the janitor's closet while sitting on a nasty toilet because the girls' locker room was not available; 2017 - Howard Nester (couldn’t find his car in Monacan’s parking lot after a match).; 2018 - Rick Adams, who after a JV match, developed a problem with his contacts so bad that another referee had to be rushed to the site to work the varsity contest; 2019 - Bob Guagliardo, while driving to a match with his top down, had his uniform shirt fly out of his convertible, so he had to ref the match in his t-shirt; 2022 - Ellen Mooradian, blew out her show and had to use electrical tape to seal it up, and Bonny Hajek, who was assigned a game at Prince Edward, confirmed it with her crew, but drove to Prince George instead, 80+ miles away; 2023 - Rick Adams, who acting as line judge in a private school playoff match, fell backwards on his a$$ trying to avoid a player moving towards him; 2024 - Stephen King, who assigned to work a playoff match at Rappahannock, he was nearly late for the start because he got pulled over by a cop for speeding
Chitty-Chitty Bang-Bang -- for the referee most likely to show up at a match in a tow truck: 1998-Angel Torres (car broke down so many times he should have bought a tow truck); 1999-Ron Farris (“who needs headlights when there’s a full moon”); 2000-David Bassler (his car – 256,000 miles and counting -- broke down; then his loaner broke down, too); 2001-Theresa Armstrong (her car’s even dirtier than Howard’s farm truck); 2002-Clark Woods (only car that broke down this year); Winter 2003-Howard Nester (nobody wants to ride in his farm truck); Fall 2003-Joe Clark (Joe’s car is even more unreliable than Howard’s farm truck); 2004-Buddy Thomas (for having his car actually break down on the way to a match); 2005-Joe ‘not again’ Clark (who now has two ‘cars’ up on blocks and was even late to the banquet to receive his prize; 2006-Bob Schumm (shows up to matches in his taxicab); 2007-Don Gathers (car was in the shop most of the season); 2008 – Donna Richardson (always seemed to have one vehicle in dire need of repair); 2009 – David Peebles (ran out of gas in the way to meet his crew); 2010 – Pat Kaveney (brand new car wouldn’t shut off at the school and he had to get someone to turn it off for him); 2011 – Darryl McCartt (car broke down on the way to a playoff match); 2012 (tie) – Tom Knapstein (work truck got stuck in the mud and could not make it to his match) and Breanna Spain (had her car towed for being illegally parked and missed her playoff assignment); 2013 – Ellen Mooradian (her car’s transmission blew up on the way to the October meeting); 2014 - Guillermo Novo (after turning down a ride to the match so that he could ride his motorcycle, had to bum a ride home from his partner because of a huge thunderstorm that struck during the match); 2015 - three winners this year - Breanna Spain (after giving a coach a yellow and red cards, had to ask his assistance to change her flat tire in a driving rainstorm – and one of the lug nuts turned out to be stripped), Michelle Clark (continued her family’s tradition of vehicle issues – her driver’s side door wouldn’t close so she drove to a match at Collegiate holding the door shut), Bob Provost (hit a deer driving himself, Pete Sweet and James Love to their playoff match at Smithfield and arrived so late the R2, Erv Myrick, started the match without them); 2016 - Brian Cowles’ wife Gina (for moving the car at the request of the R1 (Brian) during a playoff match at Monacan when the AD announced that vehicles parked in the No Parking Zone buss circle were being ticketed by a county sheriff); 2017 - Ellen Mooradian (had an accident driving to a match at Highland Springs sufficiently serious that she had to be replaced by another official); 2018 - Tanya Meekins (put her car in the shop for maintenance thinking her season was over. Bruce then surprised her with a playoff assignment); 2019 - Jasmine Henderson got a flat going to Atlee and had to be replaced; 2023 - Felicia Johnson, whose car broke down, not once but twice, and had to cancel matches just a few hours before match-time

The Above and Beyond the Call Award: 2001 - Stoney McNeil (Middlesex/Northumberland match rescheduled for Northumberland; drove to Northumberland to make sure match was covered – and we don’t assign Northumberland; Woody Wheeler waited more than an hour and a half for Cumberland’s very lost bus driver to find Park View HS); 2002 - Pat Kaveney (drove to Greensville to discover match had been moved to Powhatan, so he drove there) and Jim Aldrich (drove to Mathews to discover his match was cancelled; Ron sent him to Powhatan instead); 2003 - Doug James and John Thomas, left dinner to ref an unscheduled match; 2004 - Andy Creery who arrived at TJ for a match and found the school dark. He then drove to MWGS to find that they had moved the match without telling the Assignor; 2005 - Not given since all matches were covered; 2006 - Charles Colgin and Bob Guagliardo, who left a match at Hanover to cover an unscheduled scrimmage at Hermitage); 2007 - Jeff Carter, Major Coles, Pat Kaveney, & Darryl McCartt, who waited patiently for over an hour to begin matches at Patrick Henry and Maggie Walker when the wrong team from MWGS went to P-H by bus and had to come back; 2008 – Richard Hesse, who blocked the date to go to a concert with his wife, yet agreed to travel to Nottoway MS to work a match that was a last-minute addition to the busiest day of the season; 2009 – CVVOA Rating Committee (David Bassler, Brian Cowles, Willie Jones, & Howard Nester); 2010 – Richard Hesse, who left a regional match at Atlee (as a paying customer) to fill in for an ailing member who was to ref the regional final at Powhatan; 2011 – Mike Hicks, who drove Bonny Hajek home to get a spare key after she locked her car keys in the trunk after a match; 2013 – Richard Derricott, Jr., who left the October meeting to go pick up Ellen Mooradian when her car broke down, Dean Scott, who was scheduled for Maggie Walker, but traded matches with John Thomas, who was at Park View, so that John could make it to a meeting in Fredericksburg that night, and Leonard Lane, for serving as a ball handler for four days at the VHSL state championships at the Siegel Center; 2014 - Bonny Hajek, who on the heaviest playoff night of the year, was scheduled, then rescheduled, then rescheduled, then rescheduled, then finally rescheduled at the 5th different school; 2015 - Lydia Frye, who on November 2nd, when Bob Provost collided with a deer on the way to Smithfield for a Conference Playoff Match, left home at Bruce’s request and drove to pick up Bob and Pete Sweet and delivered them to Smithfield for the match. Entire trip took about three hours and covered 160 miles; 2016 - Nancy McLaughlin, whose car was in the shop most of the season but still managed to get to all her assignments on time; 2017 - Hank Hartz, for videotaping all his evaluees and adding on-screen commentary; 2018 - Not Awarded; 2019 - Cliff Smith, for when his car broke down in Richmond, called Uber to take him to York High School and then again to take him home. Cost him more than what he made for the assignment; 2023 - Anne Peterson – Started after our season classes were done and had never really worked a match. Volunteered to work as an R2 on a MS match that only paid for 1 ref. And did it TWICE, to get some court time and work for our group.
